About

John Whitfield bespoke furniture maker

John founded John Whitfield Bespoke Furniture to produce individually designed handmade furniture of the highest quality. As a cabinet maker, John works primarily in wood, although other materials such as metal and glass, sourced from other local craftspeople and artisans, can be incorporated according to your requirements

Sustainability is of key importance to John, and working in a way that both minimises environmental impact and contributes to the ongoing survival of native British woodland is a cornerstone of his approach.

John has always had an interest in and a passion for wood, and gained experience over a number of years working on pieces for his own home and family before making the life-changing decision to begin his formal training as a furniture designer and cabinet maker at the Leeds College of Art and Design. From there, he and his family moved to North Cumbria, where he completed his training at the University of Cumbria (formerly Cumbria Institute of the Arts) in Carlisle, the North West’s leading furniture design and craft course.

His main sources of inspiration come from nature and architecture, with a particular focus on architectural forms which are mirrored in the natural world. Please visit the gallery for examples of John’s work, further information and pricing guidelines.
